My 13 year old son's band, "The Moostash Men" just released their second album of original songs on iTunes and Amazon. (You can get a CD from Kevin at the local Tru Value hardware store.) Recorded in a basement studio with hand-me-down mixing equipment, the guys have written a series of rock songs and ballads, some with a country twist including some poignant lyrics and terrific melodies. The best part is this. They never doubted they could do this. Its really easy to list why three 13 year olds could not write songs, record them and have them published. But no one ever told the band they couldn't do it. No one took away permission to succeed. No one said "you can't go there". So they did it.
Lyrics were re-written, chords were augmented and diminished, takes were re-taken. But there never was doubt. There never was the slightest chance that they could not succeed. It was only when not if. No one said, "you kids can't do that". Si they did it.
Is this how it is in big business? Colleagues warn you that this passion is difficult. "Here's what happened the last time we tried that." "This can't work because......"
Can a passion to do something survive in there? I believe so with the right set of energy to struggle and try. If the end is worthwhile keep going! Don't stop. Banish from your mind "it can't be done. Keep going. Smile at the set backs and give gratitude for their lessons and keep going. Celebrate and give thanks for the opportunity to struggle and try.
The education as a father may be more valuable than the MBA. My children teach me passion. My children team me to never give up. My children teach me to keep faith with the dream. What I need will be there when I need it. So I am off to work to chase a passion and give gratitude for the joy of work, the chance to try my arm, the hope to make a difference.
But hey! Give back some joy and click through to "The Moostash. Men" on iTunes or Amazon. Buy yourself a great album and give the boys a sign that you too value their passion to try their arm.
